How is City Council Elected Now?
Members & Terms
Seven members make up our City Council. Each member is elected by different voters at different times. These include:
-
One mayor, elected to a two-year term by all Longmont voters in November of odd-numbered years.
-
Three “ward” councilmembers, elected to a four-year term by voters in a specific area (or “ward”) of Longmont in every other city election in alternating groups.
-
Three “at-large” councilmembers, elected to a four-year term by all Longmont voters in every other city election in alternating groups.
Our current election cycles involve electing a mix of "ward" and "at-large" seats in each election cycle:
-
2025, 2029, etc: Elections for the councilmember from Ward 2 and two at-large members.
-
2027, 2031, etc: Elections for the councilmembers from Ward 1 and Ward 3, and one at-large member.
How Passing 3C & 3D Would Improve Our Elections
Right now, voters are often confused on who they’re voting for and when because of City Council's confusing election cycles. Candidates can also win without broad support, and don’t need to be accountable to a majority of their voters.
Question 3C would implement ranked choice voting—giving voters more choice and more voice. RCV would allow you to vote for your favorite candidate, then rank your backup choices. If your favorite doesn’t win, your vote simply moves to your next choice.
Question 3D would simplify council election cycles so we vote on all “at-large” council members in one election, and all “ward” councilmembers in the next election. This way, everyone votes for the same type of position at the same time.
