Longmont Voters Approve Ranked Choice Voting, Simplified Election Cycles for City Elections

While there are still many votes left to count, it is clear that yesterday, Longmonsters said YES to Questions 3C and 3D!!!! Question 3C brings ranked choice voting to City Council elections beginning in 2029; Question 3D simplifies the schedule of Council elections so that all at-large seats are elected at the same time.
Right now, candidates can win office with just a small fraction of voters supporting them, and voters feel pressure to vote for “the lesser of two evils” instead of for their honest favorite. Ranked choice voting puts an end to that. And by changing the election schedule, everyone will get to vote for the same type of position at the same time. It will also ensure that when RCV is used to elect Longmont's three at-large seats on the same ranked ballot, a representative group of winners will be elected that reflects Longmontsters from across the political spectrum.
Voters in Longmont have taken a big step toward better elections. Ranked choice voting will give voters more choice and more voice, and make city government more representative of Longmont residents.
