Longmont City Council is holding a study session on Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) on March 3rd. This meeting is the first time Council will formally discuss RCV in Longmont and marks an important step in the conversation about strengthening Longmont's elections.
Meeting Details:
Tuesday, March 3rd
7:00 PM
Longmont Civic Center
Our Goal:
Our goal is to ensure Council sees and understands that residents want Ranked Choice Voting. A strong presence helps show that this conversation matters to the community.
What can you do?
Longmont residents are encouraged to attend and observe the discussion.
Show up and show your support (we'll have signs), and you can sign up to speak if you want to share any comments with Council.
Council is more likely to move forward if they see strong community turnout.
Talking Points if You Want to Speak:
You should, of course, speak from your own perspective and experience, but here are some talking points to get you started:
RCV provides voters with more choice and more voice by allowing voters to rank candidates in their order of preference instead of picking just one.
RCV prevents voters from having to vote strategically or for “the lesser of two evils.”
RCV helps elected bodies look like the communities they represent.
RCV can promote civil, issue-oriented campaigning.

What's Happening?
At this study session, Council will explore:
Ranked Choice Voting and its different iterations
How RCV can benefit Longmont
How RCV could be implemented into City Elections.
While no vote is expected at this meeting, the session is an opportunity for Council to learn and ask questions before deciding whether to take future action.
What is a study session?
A study session is an informational meeting where Council receives background information, discusses a topic, and asks questions before considering formal action at a later meeting. These meetings allow for a more in-depth presentation and discussion about an issue.
No formal action can be taken at these sessions outside of Council directing staff to continue researching the matter and bring items to a Regular Session for formal action.
Why this meeting matters
This is the first time City Council will formally discuss Ranked Choice Voting.
Strong community turnout helps demonstrate public interest and can influence whether Council chooses to continue moving the process forward.
